Poomully Aramthampuran’s Kalarisangham

Poomully Aramthampuran, born in the Orthodox Namboothiri family-Poomully Mana, started his education by studying Veda under his father till the age of sixteen. Thereafter he completed modern education at Calicut Zamorine College. Then, back at home he started studying Sanskrit, Vedanda,Nyaya,Meemamsa,Vishachikitsa and Ayurveda and other ancient Indian sciences under Shri.Chrukulappurath Krishnan Namboodiri of famous Koodalloor tradition. Yoga was practiced under Mahasanyasin Narayanji. Shri.Ramachandran trained him the Gymnastics.

In the mean time Thampuran came to know about Ananthan Nair, one of the prime disciples of Sri.Kanaran Gurukkal. Thampuran who has interest in Wrestling, Yoga, Gymnastics and related physical disciplines, engaged Ananthan Nair for training him Kalarippayattu. Aramthampuran established a Kalari in the ancient temple attached to Poomully Mana. Ananthan Nair taught him the basics of Kalarippayattu and handed over his charge to Sri.Appu Nambiar who was another main disciple of Kanaran Gurukkal. Thampuran was rigorously trained by Appu Nambiar for a period of 10 years.

Thampuran who had immense knowledge in Ayurveda, Yoga and other health sciences introduced the concept of ‘health aspect’ to Kalarippayattu. Thampuran soon became an authority in Kalarippayattu. A methodical version of Kalarippayattu training, without disturbing slight its original form, known as ‘Poomully method of practice’, was contributed by Aramthampuran to the world of martial arts. Later this method got wide acceptance among the masters as well as the lovers of Kalarippayattu. Thampuran became gifted with lot of followers in Kalarippayattu and other sciences. Poomully Narayanan Namboothirippad, the son of Aramthampuran is his prime disciple in Kalarippayattu.

After the demise of Aramthampuran, Poomully Narayanan Namboodirippad took charge of the Kalari and continued the training in the same manner as his father does. A trust known as ‘Poomully Aramthampuran Smaraka Trust’ was formed by the disciples and followers of Aramthampuran under the chairmanship of Poomully Narayanan Namboothirippad with the objective of promoting and keeping alive the great tradition of Aramthampuran.

The Kalarippayattu training centre started by Aramthampuran is still providing regular training to the students from all over the world under the strict supervision and guidance of Poomully Narayanan Namboothirippad in the name ‘Poomully Aramthampuran’s Kalarisangham’.
