Methodology

Vaythari : There are ‘series of oral commands’ called Vaythari. All the practices in Kalarippayattu will be in accordance with the Vaythari discipline. This way of training has been adopted from the training methods during the Vedic period. The value for the master-disciple relationship will be given the foremost importance. Often it is suspected how one will face his opponent if he skips the Vaythari. This constant discipline of practice brings the skill to face the opponent as on the need and time without following Vaythari and that is essentially the purpose of it.

Vaythari systematizes the practice into most disciplined orderly manner that enhances the ability and skill of a person to react in any difficult situation without it. Vaythari discipline will also help one to easily get attached with this martial art form, from the very beginning.

Stages in Kalaripayattu

In Kalaripayattu one evolves through 5 different stages :

  • Body exercises – meythari – brings flexibility & physical control
  • Practice using Wooden sticks – kolthari - brings coordination
  • Practice using Metal sharp weapons – ankathari - mental alertness and skill
  • Treatments and manipulation – chikitsa and maruthattu - deep experience of a human person, like vital points and pranic flow
  • As one develops, the practice evolves from physical realms to the mental, later to the intellectual and finally to the lofty heights of spirituality.

Dress code: Wearing langotti is must in Kalari. Some people use Kaccha which is a very long cotton cloth. After wearing it one can feel the lightness of his body like a feather; jumps, kicks and other movements are made much easier and faster. The person will not get exhausted with hours of continuous practice. It is also good in conditions like hernia, hydrosil, anal piles, fistula, fissure, gas formation, stomach ulcer, constipation etc.

Before and after practice: The flexibility and strength of the spinal cord is most important factor in Kalari practice. Also they use lot of power with the control of breath. It is the total integration of body movements, mental focus and breathing, hence looks graceful.

Kalari is the only exercise in which medicated oil is applied all over the body before practice. During practice the oil is absorbed in the body tissues and starts perspiring. It removes all toxins from the inner body and opens up even minute pores and hair follicles. It eliminates impurities from the body. More suppleness and energy can be absorbed in this process. The chances for cramps, stiffness, pain and weakness are also less. With the series of exercises the body is cleaned up every day as if the house is swept daily. Excess fat will be reduced and moderated. It brings the balance of body weight and strength in which the strength exceeds the weight in proportion.

Ayurveda also follows the same principle in the treatment of oleation (snehana) and sudation (swedana) in neurological conditions, muscle spasm or Vata diseases.

After the practice every student is to bathe and as much water flows over the spine so much the person gets relieved from exhaustion. Bathing enhances the digestive power, brings luster to the skin and deep sleep.

Spiritual aspect: In Kalari Goddess Sakti is worshipped in the form of Rana Bhairavi and Guru(the master) is also revered in an exalted position. An adept takes the woe that one will use it only for the good, both for him and mankind and never misuse or exploit. It is Sakti Sanchalana (transmission of power) from Goddess to the Guru and Guru to the disciple. “May this Sakti enter in everyone who seeks this knowledge with the grace of that divine power”.
